What is new in the erwin Data Modeler 12.5 release ?

Quest Software has released the new version of erwin Data Modeler and erwin Mart Server, incorporating innovative enhancements that improve data modeling and management.

erwin Data Modeler 12.5 (client)

Version 12.5 brings new features, target database updates and productivity enhancements to the Data Modeler client.

Project Explorer

Now, thanks to this new functionality, you can organize all database models in a single project within erwin DM. This way, you can save projects as folders in the location of your choice and access them easily, either from there or directly from erwin DM. On the other hand, the new Project Explorer and its toolbar facilitate and simplify the complete management of your models.

Denormalization Support for NoSQL Models

Advanced denormalisation is now available for all NoSQL database models.

Bitbucket Support

Support for Bitbucket as a Git repository has been added.

Database Version Support

  1. Teradata supports version 17.x as target database.
  2. MongoDB supports version 5.x and 6.x as target database.
  3. AlloyDB supports version 1.1 as target database.
  4. Neo4j has been certified to work with version 4.4.x.
  5. Databricks Partner Connect is now available for erwin DM. In addition, Databricks supports Unity Catalog as target database.

MongoDB:
  • Improved schema validation options: Schema validation options have now been optimised to facilitate forward engineering of a model.
  • Display Field is Required Option: The Display Field Null Option property of the MongoDB ER Diagram Editor has been replaced by the new Display Field is Required Option property.
JSON:
  • Display Field is Required Option: The Display Field Null Option property of the JSON ER Diagram Editor has now been replaced by Display Field is Required Option.
  • JSON Array Element Option: The JSON Reverse Engineering Wizard now includes a JSON Array Element option, which allows you to specify whether to process the entire contents of the JSON array or just the first element during reverse engineering.
  • Improved Viewer tab: The Viewer tab of the JSON Reverse Engineering Schema Generation Wizard has recently been improved. It now displays both the names of JSON objects and arrays and the number of child elements they contain.

Productivity and UI Enhancements

Several additions and enhancements have been implemented to improve erwin DM’s productivity and usage experience. These enhancements are:

  • Column Sort Order: NoSQL databases now support column sort order function in addition to SQL databases.

erwin Mart Server 12.5

Erwin Mart Server serves as the primary engine for storing and accessing erwin Data Modeler Workgroup Edition repositories. This engine is available both as user-deployable software and as a service (SaaS). In version 12.5, a number of new features and enhancements have been incorporated, including the following:

– erwin ER360

erwin ER360 optionally complements the erwin Mart server, both on premises and in the cloud (SaaS). It facilitates managed self-service access to detailed metadata and data model visualisations via a web browser. In this way, it fosters collaboration between business teams, governance teams and other stakeholders, improving data literacy.

– erwin Mart Portal (formerly erwin Mart Administrator)

erwin Mart Portal now allows viewing permissions to be set on libraries, ensuring that users only access those libraries they are authorised to view. In addition, the Catalogue Manager highlights models containing Personally Identifiable Information (PII) with a ‘PII’ label.

– Enterprise Modelling Compliance

To ensure data quality, Enterprise Modelling Compliance (EMC) is now part of the erwin Mart Portal. With this tool, users define custom policies and rules to ensure data compliance in database models stored in Mart. They can also create custom jobs to enforce these policies. This generates detailed reports that include statistics on passes, errors and warnings.

– Enterprise Glossary

With Enterprise Glossary, you can assign business terms to objects in your data models. These business terms, which represent vocabularies used in projects, departments or functions within your organization, are grouped together in the glossary. In addition, you have the ability to associate these glossaries to the model, which allows you to map the business terms to the corresponding objects. As a result of these mappings and associations, it is possible to generate reports showing the relationships between the model name and the number of unmapped objects. Such reports include details such as model name, object type, object name and mapped term.

– DM Connect for DI Support

DM Connect for DI makes it easy for Mart administrators to export model metadata to erwin Data Intelligence (DI). This tool now includes support for the following features:

  • Business entity types: When exporting the model, the system saves the business entity type (i.e., the system environment type) within the environment details in erwin DI.
  • Validation rules: In addition, on each export, the system records the validation rules as extended properties in erwin DI.

– Git Support
You can now view the DDL of one version of the model and compare it with another directly from the Catalogues panel.
